L'erbolario
L'Erbolario is an Italian cosmetics company founded in 1978 in Lodi, Italy, by Franco Bergamaschi and Daniela Villa, a husband-and-wife team that began the business as a small artisanal herbalist's shop. Bergamaschi is described in the company's history as the founder, with Villa, a biologist and cosmetologist, leading product formulation. The earliest products were drawn from family herbal recipes handed down by Bergamaschi's father.
The company specializes in plant-based skincare, body care, hair care, fragrances, and home fragrance, marketed under its own "phytocosmetic" framing — formulations that combine traditional herbal extracts with contemporary cosmetic chemistry. L'Erbolario's packaging is recognizable for its botanical-illustration artwork drawn from antique herbarium plates.
L'Erbolario operates a network of more than 5,000 retail points in Italy, including roughly 200 monobrand franchise stores, and distributes to approximately 45 countries. In 2004 the founders co-established a sister company, Erbamea, with phytotherapy specialist Fausto Mearelli, focused on herbal supplements and ingredient supply.
